Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Medical Director for Clinical Operations – 911 services, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS), the Medical Director, Learning and Professional Practice, will sit as a member of the Clinical Governance and Professional Practice senior team. Working in full partnership with the Directors of both the Learning Department and Professional Practice, this position is jointly accountable for establishing, developing, and sustaining effective strategic priorities of BCEHS and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA).
Key Accountabilities
In a dyad relationship with the Directors of Learning and Professional Practice:
- Support the ongoing development of staff and faculty within the Learning Department and Professional Practice; the Medical Director for Learning and Professional Practice and the Directors are jointly accountable for developing, managing, evaluating, and overseeing the delivery of training, continuing education and governance of professional practice within BCEHS.
- Provide clinical expertise and supervision for the development of curriculum and governance of professional practice for paramedics within BCEHS
- Foster strategic, clinical and operational relationships with public safety, educational and health authority stakeholders directly related to identifying challenges and opportunities that will improve patient care within BCEHS to improve processes and services achieving clinical and operational excellence
- Provide medical leadership and oversight for program development and implementation related to Learning and Professional Practice at BCEHS
- Facilitate and support a culture of staff safety and engagement
Strategic and Operational Responsibilities
- With the Directors of Learning, the Medical Director for Learning and Professional Practice, is jointly accountable to develop and monitor training plans for BCEHS, which align with the overall operations service plan and be accountable for achieving the objectives contained within
- Work collaboratively across all operational and clinical programs at BCEHS, with the CMO, Medical Directors and Clinical Operations Directors to ensure a strategic and operational plan is in place for the program(s) within your responsibility
- Work collaboratively with the clinical and operational leadership of the Emergency Medical Assistance Licensing Branch (EMALB), higher learning institutes and other key external stakeholders in BC
- Provide leadership and coordination with respect to professional practice, including and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, participation in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, and patient safety event reviews
- Participate as a clinical leader in disclosure of adverse events as appropriate and support relevant medical directors and others in enhancing their skills
- Contribute to the BCEHS Communities of Practice in collaboration with the Clinical Operations and Practice Leaders.
- Act as representative of BCEHS in specific activities from time to time and undertake specific projects assigned by the EMD-CO/911 or CMO.
What you bring
- Current registration with BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, or eligibility for registration.
- Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine or Emergency Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or an appropriate external equivalent).
- Candidates with clinical experience practicing in prehospital and transport medicine will be strongly favoured.
- Diplomate in Prehospital and Transport Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is highly desirable.
- A master’s degree in Education or relevant health care discipline is desired with at least 3-5 years of recent, related experience in quality improvement and large complex academic settings.
- The ability to work in a co-leadership model combined with a proven ability to build internal and external partnerships and respond to needs while supported by an acute awareness of the impact of actions.
- Strong leadership skills, including a clear understanding of hospital processes, as demonstrated via the LEADS Framework.
- Creative and flexible critical thinking skills.
- Commitment to a patient and family-centred model of care.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, critical thinking, and time management skills.
- Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system.
- Supports team members on their learning journey, ensuring education strategy for team/department to implement Indigenous Cultural Safety at a practical level.
- Works collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
