About Lower Mainland Laboratories
Lower Mainland Laboratories (LM Labs) is a service of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). We are responsible for providing public laboratory services at 31 laboratory sites and 33 patient services centres throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
Hospital-based laboratories within Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Providence Health Care and PHSA provide both inpatient and outpatient laboratory services. Our specialty laboratories provide a variety of reference and specialized testing.
Seventy to eighty percent of clinical decisions are based on laboratory test results. Our highly trained staff are committed to providing the highest quality laboratory services to all our clients. As per the current Public Health Order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with PHSA as of October 26, 2021.
The Laboratory Assistant, COVID Response performs general laboratory and clerical procedures related to data entry, and the receipt, handling, accessioning, preparation and distribution of laboratory specimens
What you’ll do
- Prepare specimens for testing in accordance with established procedures by performing duties such as centrifugation, aliquoting and loading samples onto specimen racks.
- Verify COVID-related specimen type according to established procedures, sort and assign laboratory numbers to specimens, in priority according to pre-defined criteria, and apply barcode labels according to established operating procedures.
- Receive incoming specimens and requisitions and check for accuracy and completeness of information such as personal health number, name, date of birth and COVID-related test required. Contact physicians or labs for missing information and makes necessary corrections.
- Process test requisitions by entering patient data into computer systems, issue new patient identification number where required, obtain or clarify missing information, correct errors in patient demographic data and enter corrections into computer systems. Enter test requests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Respond to request for test results, faxes same, as required.
What you bring
- Grade 12
- One (1) year's recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
You will also have the ability to
- Keyboard at 35 wpm.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Deal with others effectively.
- Carry out the physical duties of the position.
- Organize work.
- Operate related equipment.
