BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services is seeking a passionate and committed Occupational Therapist to join their new Enhanced Care Housing (ECH) Project. Enhanced Care Housing will aim to provide the best service possible for improved health outcomes for clients, helping them to safely reintegrate into the community. As a new supported housing program, the Enhanced Care Housing team will comprise both health care professionals and support positions for all aspects of daily living (e.g. food services, housekeeping).
You will be working alongside a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who support clients with complex mental health issues and/or substance use disorders and are deemed not criminally responsible for a crime or unfit to stand trial. By focusing on our clients’ strengths and resources, rather than their symptoms and problems, this position will support their transition out of the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and into the Community Transitional Care (CTC) housing program.
What you’ll do
The Occupational Therapist will provide therapy corresponding to established standards to nurture self-care, productivity and constructive use of leisure time. In addition, this role also collaborates with interdisciplinary groups to support clients by implementing evidence-based care to ensure improved health outcomes, guiding them to safely reintegrate into the community.
- Provide Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment in accordance with established standards to promote self-care, productivity and constructive use of leisure time by performing duties such as assessing needs, planning, implementing and evaluating treatment programs to an individual client/patient or group of client(s)/patient(s) in various environments.
- Document information including relevant clinical data, assessments, treatment plans, progress reports and outcomes.
- Participate in interdisciplinary groups and/or teams including members such as physicians and nursing staff by performing duties such as providing clinical input and suggestions related to the management of the referred client/patient or group of clients/patients to ensure that high quality care is delivered.
- Assist clients and families to obtain specific equipment to meet the individual needs of the client/patient by performing duties such as communicating both verbally and in writing with agencies regarding the specific needs of the client/patient and requesting funding and liaising with suppliers regarding equipment needs.
- Maintain communication with clients/patients and families and/or caregivers in order to foster optimal progress for the client/patient through methods such as establishing and maintaining supportive, collaborative and therapeutic relationships. Participate on professional committees/teams and provides services to designated programs through methods such as attending meetings, providing written/verbal reports regarding referred clients/patients and to facilitate the resolution of issues and advocate for the goals and objectives of clients/patients.
What you bring
- Graduation from a recognized university with an approved program in Occupational Therapy.
- Two (2) years’ recent, related experience working in a psychiatric setting with individuals who have complex mental health and addictions issues or equivalent.
- Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
- Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) of the British Columbia Society of Occupational Therapists (BCSOT).
- Class 5 Driver’s License.
Skills & Knowledge
As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have:
- Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the Criminal Code of Canada as it applies to the rights and obligations of forensic psychiatric clients and staff.
- Ability to effectively manage conflict situations and aggressive behaviour and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques.
- Broad knowledge of therapy theory and clinical practice within a client and family centred model of care.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time (1.00 FTE)
Wage: (if applicable) $35.98 to $44.79 per hour. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
