BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BCWH) is the only facility in British Columbia devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns and families. It provides a broad range of specialized women’s health services that address the health needs of women of all ages and backgrounds. BC Women’s is one of the largest maternity facilities in Canada with over 7,000 births a year, and is both the major primary and secondary maternity services provider in the Lower Mainland and the cornerstone of the provincial tertiary care system. As an academic health centre, BCW’s mandate includes providing strong leadership in research and the education and professional development of health care professionals in areas related to the health of the populations we serve.


The Department of Anesthesia is seeking an Academic Anesthesiologist to fulfill strategic roles within the department. In this role, you will carry out elective and emergency clinical anesthesia responsibilities and participate in the activities of the acute pain service.  As an integral member of the Department of Anesthesia, your participation and leadership will contribute to the quality improvement and service delivery of obstetric anesthesia at BC Women’s and beyond. It is expected that the successful candidate will be actively involved in education and research at BCWH, the University of British Columbia, and within our active combined Clinical/Research Fellowship Program. Academic protected time is assigned according to an objective assessment of requirements.


Applicants will have completed a Medical Degree, post-graduate fellowship training in obstetric anesthesia, and some formal training in education/research or equivalent. Applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Desirable characteristics: research experience with a track record in publication success, experience of independent anesthesia practice; a proven engagement with quality assurance and service development activity; undergraduate and postgraduate teaching/medical education experience.


Successful candidates will be recommended for a Clinical Faculty Appointment to the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, at The University of British Columbia. Academic rank will be dependent on qualifications and previous experience.
