Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Division of General Pediatrics
The University of British Columbia (UBC) and BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH)
Vancouver, British Columbia
Temporary Full-Time – one year
Applications are open to all pediatric trainees who successfully have completed 4 years of training in a nationally accredited pediatric medicine program and are seeking advanced clinical training in hospital medicine combined with an opportunity to gain experience in a scholarly initiative such as quality improvement or medical education.
The Department of Pediatrics, in collaboration with the University of British Columbia Postgraduate Medical Education office, offers Clinical Fellowship training for postgraduate medical trainees to undertake advanced clinical and research training at BC Children’s Hospital. Please note that a clinical fellowship on its own is not a pathway to permanent practice as a specialist in Canada and clinical fellowship years alone do not count towards eligibility for Canadian licensure or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification.
The Hospital Medicine Fellowship curriculum will follow the recommendation of the US Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Curriculum. It will comprise of 3 main sections: 1. Clinical care, 2. Systems and Scholarship, and 3. Individualized curriculum. Each section will have 4 blocks (See attached example). The UBC Department of Pediatrics has more than 400 clinical and academic faculty working at BCCH and in community-based practices across the province, together caring for a pediatric population of approximately one million. The Departmental academic home is based at BCCH in Vancouver where accredited training programs are offered in general pediatrics (68residents) and 16 different pediatric subspecialties. The Division of General Pediatrics at BCCH comprises 23 pediatricians, including physicians who provide clinical care to medical inpatients hospitalized on a busy Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU), consultative care to other hospitalized patients at BCCH, palliative care consultations and telephone consultations (with growing Telehealth opportunities) across the province. The inpatient units moved into a beautiful new state-of-the-art building (Teck Acute Care Centre) in 2017, offering family-centered care in single patient rooms. Outpatient care is provided in the BCCH-based medical day unit and in the ambulatory building. Areas of scholarly interest include educational innovation (including competency-based education and simulation-based teaching) and several quality improvement initiatives. BCCH shares a campus with Women’s Hospital, Child and Youth Mental Health (Healthy Minds) and the BCCH Research Institute, providing a rich environment for multidisciplinary clinical care, education and research collaborative projects. In 2020 the Sunny Hill Centre for Children, that provides specialized services to children and youth with developmental disabilities, will relocate to this campus in newly renovated space.
The successful applicant must have a medical degree, a specialty diploma in pediatrics or be currently enrolled in a Residency Training Program in Canada or elsewhere and in addition will meet all College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) requirements, including English language proficiency (if English was not the official language of medical education), excellent clinical skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with families in the care of children. A strong commitment to best practice and advancing knowledge in their field, strong inter-professional skills working in complex environments and a commitment to an academic pediatric medical sub-specialty environment are also required.
