Medical Biochemistry Consultant, Data Analytics - Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services

The Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) mandate is to provide provincial oversight for all aspects of publicly funded medical laboratory and pathology services within British Columbia. PLMS is a PHSA program. These services include, but are not limited to, provincial planning, coordination, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on patient results and provincial health outcomes. PLMS is also accountable for the provision of ministry-delegated services in support of the Laboratory Services Act, oversight of key private sector relationships, management of the Provincial Blood Coordination Office (PBCO), and the provision of medical laboratory services throughout the Lower Mainland.

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Medical Lead, Analytics at Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services, the Medical Clinical Consultant will support the development of analytic capacity within PLMS. The role will provide clinical and laboratory medicine insight while working with the data acquired by the analytics team, supporting a decision support infrastructure to inform the PLMS mandate. This role will support service planning, utilization and medical best practice. The role will participate in projects that facilitate evidence-based and data-driven decisions, ultimately supporting PLMS to achieve its strategic goals through informatics and complex data analysis.


The Medical Clinical Consultant will support Medical Lead, Analytics, and Senior Director, PLMS Analytics by providing clinical and medical advice and sharing knowledge, vision, and feedback regarding the analytics exercises and project, including:


  • Provide clinical and medical input to support defining priorities and long term vision for PLMS Analytics.
  • Help identify important areas within their discipline that can benefit from the support of analytics to improve patient care and patient outcomes.
  • Advocate and promote the use of analytics and evidence-based decision making in their discipline and in PLMS.
  • Help identify opportunities to use data and analytics to improve lab process and support operational leaders.
  • Problem-solve and recommend appropriate medical and operational responses to findings.
  • Identify and explain potential misinterpretations of the data to avoid inappropriate responses using their clinical and medical expertise.
  • Help the Analytics team learn and understand the process and clinical nuances of the tests of interest.
  • Suggest and support the development of tools to detect utilization trends and outlier behaviors to increase patient safety.
  • Liaise and collaborate with physician stakeholders to discuss analytical findings and appropriate responses.
  • Work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams; in response to requirements for information to support decision-making.
  • Support collaborative efforts with the Ministry of Health, BC Health Authorities, and private providers to support strategic projects; respond to requests for strategic and operational information in support of PLMS, its committees, and the Ministry of Health.



  1. Education, Training, and Experience

The successful application will hold certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in a Laboratory Medicine Specialty and licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC or hold certification from the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry; with relevant post-graduate training and at least 5 years recent related experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Experience with data analysis of clinical and laboratory data
  • Familiarity of information systems, including data acquisition, standards and software interfaces
  • Capacity to understand and communicate interpretation of lab analytic elements such as, data processing, visualizations, and associated statistics to broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated team-building and facilitation excellence to collaborate across multiple disciplines, environments, and functional areas; ability to influence, coach, and mentor others; demonstrated innovative leadership thinking, creativity, and organizational skills.
  • Critical thinking and leadership capabilities in the areas of leading self, engaging others, achieving results, developing coalitions, and system transformation.
