Medical Microbiologist, Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine - BC Children’s Hospital

BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province’s most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.


BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BCWH) is the only facility in British Columbia (BC) devoted primarily to the health of women, newborns and families. It provides a broad range of specialized women’s health services that address the health needs of women of all ages and backgrounds and the Neonatal Program is the hub of the provincial quaternary care system. BC Women’s is one of the largest maternity facilities in Canada, with about 7,200 births a year, and is both the major primary and secondary maternity services provider in BC’s Lower Mainland region and the cornerstone of the provincial tertiary care system. As an academic health centre, BCW’s mandate includes providing strong leadership in research through the BC Women’s Research Institute and education in partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC) as well as professional development of health care professionals in areas related to the health of the populations we serve.

Medical Microbiologist
Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
BC Children’s Hospital

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals is seeking for two qualified and highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to join the Division of Microbiology, Virology and Infection Control, located in the heart of Vancouver, on British Columbia’s West Coast. These two roles have opened up due to the retirement of two of our valued team members.


The Department provides the province’s pediatric and obstetric populations with tertiary/quaternary laboratory care. The Division is responsible for providing academic pediatric and maternal-fetal medicine diagnostic services for the province of BC, with a focus on rapid bacteriology and virology testing, including an extensive menu of microbiological nucleic acid amplification tests. Infection control coverage is also provided for all of the PHSA programs.


The successful candidate will primarily provide medical microbiology and infection control services, including participation in the on-call roster. The microbiologist will be required to build relationships and provide prompt and expert consultative services to physicians and other health care providers. Daily meetings occur with Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Infection Control and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist. The microbiologist will be expected to be actively engaged in academic teaching and research.


The successful candidate will be recommended for appointment to the University of British Columbia (UBC), in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at an academic or clinical rank dependent on experience and qualifications.


For consideration, candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia and must have obtained a Fellowship in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold an equivalent qualification, by the time of appointment.
