Paralegal – 2 part-time positions

Who are we looking for?

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced paralegal to work in the healthcare field. We require someone with Paralegal Certification. Personality and fit will be critical for this position. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced environment, will communicate frequently and effectively and will be proactive about building relationships. Strong communication skills, organization, diplomacy, confidentiality, and enjoyment of teamwork are equally important.

What you’ll do

The paralegal prepares and sends correspondence; schedules meetings for legal counsel as directed; conducts research and organizes and analyzes information for presentations; under the direction of legal counsel, supports drafting and document preparation, assists with hearing preparation court appearances; maintains filing, precedents and our case management and database systems, and assists legal counsel as necessary with presentations, project work, and other related tasks. The work performed is highly confidential.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Maintains case management and tracking systems for all files referred to the legal team for advising.
  2. Liaises with court and administrative tribunal registries and oversees accurate filing and retrieval of court and tribunal documents.
  3. Identifies and assembles books of documents and books of authorities for arbitrations and mediations, assists with hearing preparation and may also attend hearing/mediation. Compiles and organizes documentary and other evidence for workplace investigation reports. Prepares chronologies and summaries of fact to support merit assessment of matters referred to arbitration and mediation.
  4. Drafts correspondence and provides support in preparing legal documentation including memoranda, committee meeting materials, pleadings, and other administrative tribunal and court filings.
  5. Organizes and analyzes information to identify relevant judicial decisions, statutes, legal articles, and other pertinent material for legal counsel as requested.
  6. Prepares and distributes minutes for key meetings.
  7. Checks and edits legal forms and documents for accuracy; makes recommendations on precedents and presentation of documents to enhance the professional presentation of materials and maintains a legal precedent library.
  8. Provides legal and factual research services (review and summarize case law, research legislation, legal articles, and research databases) to in-house legal counsel. May also be required to research other subject areas, for example, relating to information and records management.
  9. Aids legal counsel as directed with presentations, project work, minute-taking, calendar updates, and other tasks.
  10. Supports the legislative compliance and policy work of the team.
  11. Manages the filing of trademark and official/prohibited mark applications with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), liaising with the CIPO, and tracking CIPO applications and registrations.  
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Education, Training, and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or completion of a college diploma as a paralegal. Paralegal Certification preferred.

• A minimum of five (5) years’ recent related experience.

• Experience in healthcare, intellectual property and/or corporate and commercial law is an asset.

• Experience real property including in preparing and registering legal instruments in BC’s Land Register is an asset.

• An equivalent combination of education, training and equivalent experience may be considered.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to perform legal research, organize and analyze legal information, prepare legal documents and present information in a clear and logical format, research legislation, and maintain a legal filing and indexing system.
  • Superior time management skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects and responsibilities at once and remain calm under pressure.
  • Experience with MS Office including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, Westlaw, CanLii or other online legal research tools.
  • Proficient in using document management systems and other legal software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to make effective presentations to groups.
  • Ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to participate in a shared understanding of requirements in the work environment and fully contribute to team and department goals.
  • Analytical skills and an ability to understand a situation by breaking it into smaller pieces and/or tracing the implications in a step-by-step manner.
  • Ability to identify issues or problems and develop strategies, ideas and opportunities for resolving them.
  • Ability to prioritize, take initiative, coordinate, manage multiple competing priorities and meet deadlines, while paying high attention to detail.
  • Willingness to learn and a positive attitude are critical.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Job Type: Casual part-time hours (22.5 hours per week)
Wage: $42/hour - $56/hour as a casual employee, total earnings include an additional 13% in lieu of benefits and paid vacation. The rate for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan
