BC Women’s Hospital's FIR program is a recognized leader in perinatal addiction programming that upholds Indigenous cultural safety and trauma and violence informed practices. Guiding principles of harm reduction, recovery-oriented practice, and equity-oriented care are core to the work we do at FIR (Families in Recovery). We support the interdisciplinary teamwork to collaboratively support women’s goals and provide rooming in as a standard for women with substance use disorders.

BCW is a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), which plans, manages and evaluates specialized health services with the BC health authorities to provide equitable and cost-effective health care for people throughout the province. As a consulting psychiatrist with expertise in women’s health, substance use and concurrent psychiatric disorders, you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including perinatal addiction medicine, nursing, social worker and counsellors. You will provide psychiatric care to perinatal patients impacted by substance use, trauma and mental health challenges. Special focus, experience or training in women’s health, gender diverse patients and a deep knowledge of trauma informed and culturally safe care is required. Completion of an accredited addiction medicine training program or equivalent and experience working with women and families with substance use disorders is highly desirable.


Clinical duties will primarily support the inpatient population but may also include consultation to our affiliated FIR Outpatient program. The position is a 0.2 FTE.


As the successful candidate for this position, you will have demonstrated a commitment to academic and clinical excellence as well as patient and family centered care. FIR has an active teaching program for medical students, residents and Addiction Medicine fellows, and participation in research projects will also be encouraged. You will have accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. You will have demonstrated ability to work your clinical work and professional relationships.
