Surgical Recovery Specialist, Organ Donation and Hospital Development

The Surgical Recovery Specialist (SRS) functions as an integral part of the Organ Donation and Hospital Development (ODHD) team. The SRS acts as a provincial resource for the surgical recovery of organs. This includes coordination between the donor and transplanting operating rooms (OR), perfusion and packaging of organs for transplantation, as well as arranging for the safe transportation of organs. This position is also responsible for the compilation and analysis of data for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement processes and for the formal development and delivery of education programs on solid organ surgical recovery for health care professionals throughout the province of British Columbia (BC). 

What you’ll do

• Perform a variety of functions related to organ recovery such as participation in recovery surgeries, on-site liaison with the donor hospital, review of deceased and living-donor documentation to ensure compliance to medico-legal and regulatory context, arrival of all required equipment and supplies at the donor hospital OR, coordination and set-up of the donor hospital operating room, applying universal precautions and aseptic techniques, perfusion of solid organs recovered from deceased and living donors, ex-vivo storage of the donor organ(s), collection of information regarding the intra-operative and pre-operative management of the recipients and status of the donor organ, packaging, labeling, transportation and distribution of recovered organs, communication with transplant centers and surgeons, transportation suppliers, Coroner, and donor families as needed. The recovery can occur throughout BC, Canada and the US.
• Monitor and maintain surgical supplies and equipment necessary for organ recovery, perfusion and packaging, including monitoring equipment and supplies, sourcing, negotiating pricing of and ordering surgical supplies in accordance with the BCT Quality Plan and Health Canada requirements
• Provide direction to the Organ Recovery Assistant (ORA) during organ retrievals and participates in the performance monitoring and feedback for the ORAs.
• Provide consultation, guidance and advice on surgical practices to hospital medical and allied health staff including the development and provision of educational initiatives, as the provincial resource on organ retrieval.
• Provide education and teaching about organ donation and organ recovery to internal and external stakeholders throughout the province.
• Make decisions that impact the accuracy, reliability and acceptability of further processes within BCT and donor hospitals. 
• Participate in a 24-hour call rotation which may be physically demanding.

What you bring

• A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in a Health Sciences Program; certification or equivalent experience in the education of public and health-care professionals.
• Three to five (3-5) years of critical care, operating room or organ donation experience.
• Designation as a healthcare professional preferred.
• Must have a valid BC driver’s license, passport and access to a vehicle.

• Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills with all levels of personnel in the healthcare field with the ability to communicate complex clinical information. 
• The ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.  Demonstrated ability to manage numerous concurrent tasks in a high-stress time-sensitive environment. Excellent facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
• Knowledge and abilities in areas of quality improvement, healthcare provider education, including knowledge of adult education principles and methods
• Knowledge of the operating room environment, aseptic techniques and surgical equipment and procedures.
• The ability to manage unpredictable schedules and situations and have the physical stamina to work long hours when necessary. Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds or more when necessary.
• Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite: Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Visio. Experience with electronic patient records an asset.
• Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
• Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

Wage: $72,445 - $104,139 /year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
