- Location: This particular opportunity will support a Fraser Health Authority Site known as Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Canyon Hospital located at 45600 Menholm Rd, Chilliwack, BC V2P 1P7 and 1275 7th Ave, Hope, BC V0X 1L4.
- Program Start Date: Orientation begins end of August(date TBD) and Classes begin September 2 2025.
- Program Length: 2 years, 2027

About the Program
The Provincial Laboratory Medicine Service (PLMS) is partnering with the BC Ministry of Health (BCMOH), Provincial Health Services Authority(PHSA), Fraser Health Authority(FHA) and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority(VCH) to sponsor a select number of students for the Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist (CLXT) training program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
This unique, in-demand program trains you in both medical laboratory and x-ray imaging disciplines—designed especially for health care delivery in rural communities. Graduates will be equipped to perform a variety of lab procedures, diagnostic x-rays, and work with advanced health information systems and imaging technology.
What You’ll Gain

Program Structure
- Year 1 – 38 weeks of full-time classroom training at NAIT in Edmonton, Alberta.
- Year 2 – 40-week hospital practicum at Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Canyon Hospital
Within 6 months of successful completion of the NAIT CLXT program, you will be required to successfully complete the following courses through NAIT Continuing Education:
- TRAM101 Fundamentals of Blood Product Management (Online)
- TRAM201 Pretransfusion Testing and Basic Investigative Techniques (Online)
- Application of Transfusion Medicine Techniques at Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Canyon Hospital

- You have some hands-on, practical or educational experience in medical or health care lab related work—whether through science-related post secondary education programs (courses, diploma, degree or certificate) i.e. Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc),Diploma in Veterinary Assistant, Dentistry, Engineering, Arts , Medical Laboratory Assistant training or by working in the field.
- You are a Problem solver who excel in fast-paced, hands-on environments.
- You are passionate about helping others and ready to make a difference in BC’s rural communities
- You are living in or willing to move/commute to Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Canyon Hospital in order to make an impact in the local community
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Core Competencies
- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within LM Labs contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.
- Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
- Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.
- Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.
Program Eligibility & Requirements
To be eligible, you must meet the following academic requirements:
Grade 12 with a minimum 63% in each of the following:
- Language Arts (English 30-2)
- Mathematics (Math 30-2)
- Biology (Biology 30)
- Chemistry (Chemistry 30)
- Proof of English Language Proficiency
You must also have the following post-secondary pre-requisites (completed within the past five years):
- Medical Terminology: Completion of NAIT ITMS100 - Medical Terminology with a minimum final grade of 60% within the last 5 years. Limited Alberta only post-secondary Medical Terminology courses that are 1 or more credits and completed within 5 years of the application deadline with a final grade of 60% or greater may be considered for equivalency.
- Human Anatomy and Physiology: Completion of NAIT ANPH100 Anatomy and Physiology with a minimum final grade of 60% within the last 5 years. Limited Alberta only post-secondary Human Anatomy and Physiology courses that are 3 or more credits and completed within 5 years of the application deadline with a final grade of 60% or greater may be considered for equivalency.
Important Notes
- Selected applicants must enroll in the September 2025 NAIT CLXT intake.
- Current Provincial Health Services Authority(PHSA) staff will be placed on unpaid educational leave for the 2-year duration and paid the stipend of $930.00 per week.
- You must complete the program and commit to a 2-year placement at Chilliwack General Hospital and Fraser Canyon Hospital.
- Do NOT apply directly to NAIT at this time. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted with further details.
- You will be hired initially as non contract but once you are in the position you will be hired as Health Sciences Professionals Bargaining Association (HSA).
