Vancouver Island

Overview

Vancouver Island is indeed, an island – accessible to the rest of British Columbia by passenger ferry, air travel, or private boat. “The Island” as it’s generally called, is a long stretch of south-to-north land, dotted with incredibly diverse communities ranging from the historic Victoria (BC’s capital city) to the surfer vibes of Tofino. The Island is as self-sufficient as any other region within BC, and has several points of contact with the government-run ferry system.

Did You Know?

The West Coast Trail attracts active backpackers from across the world, providing a 5- to 7-day hike across a 75-kilometer trail.

Climate / Landscape

Vancouver Island is the most western region of BC and Canada, and the most southern part of BC. It’s surrounded by ocean waters, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca separating it from our US neighbours to the south (Washington State).

The climate of the Island varies as much as the geography: Victoria in the south boasts the least precipitation of all of BC, with residents enjoying year-round golf, cycling, and water sports.

The Island’s west side is known for spectacular storm watching as well as BC’s surfing destination. Travelling up-island, the weather changes to four full seasons with sun and snow.

Amenities

The Island comprises many welcoming communities with community centres, arts venues, outdoor recreation facilities, and shopping areas.

The Greater Victoria Region offers many distinct neighbourhoods including historic Downtown Victoria, the old-growth forests of Sooke, and the growing suburban community of Langford.

Mid-island is anchored by Nanaimo, with large shopping areas and surrounded by picturesque towns and waterfront villages.

The north end of the Island includes the cities of Courtenay and Campbell River, which also serve more northern island communities and multiple small islands.

Infrastructure

Hospitals operated by the local health authority include Victoria General Hospital, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, North Island Hospital (locations in Campbell River and Comox Valley), and Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Post Secondary Institutions include the University of Victoria, Royal Roads University, North Island College, Camosun College and Vancouver Island University.

The Victoria International Airport serves international travellers, while several regional airports support national travel. BC Ferries operates vehicle/passenger ferries to connect the Island to Vancouver as well as a network of main islands.
