This is a provincial position and can work out of any of the 6 regional Cancer Centers.
Reporting to the Manager, Indigenous Cancer Control, the Indigenous Design & Cultural Safety Lead is responsible for supporting the Provincial Health Services Authority’s (PHSA) commitment to advancing cultural safety and cultural humility within the context of facility planning and design. As a member of the Indigenous Cancer Control team, the Lead guides discussions in support of strategic priorities on cultural safety and cultural humility within existing and future facility projects and promotes positive dialogue and meaningful inclusion of First Nations, Metis and Inuit community priorities.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including Indigenous community partners, government partners and regional health authorities in support of PHSA’s commitment to advancing cultural safety and cultural humility within the context of facility planning and design.
- Function as the Indigenous cultural safety and cultural humility point of contact for facility planning and design; liaise with internal and external stakeholders; and coordinate information flow related to assigned initiatives to ensure timely and responsive communications.
- Partner with Facilities Clinical Planners to ensure the inclusion of Indigenous Cultural Safety and Cultural Humility elements in the development of documents such as project charters, business cases and functional programs.
- Deliver organization-wide, initiative specific presentations that demonstrate and highlight PHSA’s commitment to Indigenous cultural safety and cultural humility.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote dialogue and problem solve facility design issues affecting Indigenous individuals, families and communities.
- Analyze and compile data; maintain databases; prepare and submit a variety of reports reflecting milestones, goals and objectives. Provide updates on activities including key challenges and successes.
- Prepare and submit periodic reports that evaluate the quality of the program and resulting achievements to ensure alignment with the portfolio priorities.
- Contribute to a variety of documents including briefing notes, business cases, issue analyses, impact assessments and risk evaluations by performing duties such as gathering information, analyzing issues, drawing conclusions and making recommendations, preparing final reports and presentations for use by internal and external clients.
- Participate in and contributes to ongoing dialogue with external stakeholders including Foundations, the Ministry of Health, and First Nation Communities, Metis Chartered Communities and Indigenous Service Agencies on issues related to facilities project planning, design, and project implementation with limits as established by the Planning and Project Directors.
Qualifications:
- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field plus three (3) years of recent related experience working with Indigenous people and communities and understanding their needs including extensive understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Health issues, protocols and health needs, including the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the client and community.
You have:
- Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous health care needs in facility planning and service delivery needs including knowledge and understanding of community-based services such as community health centres and Indigenous service providers.
- Knowledge of the cultures, protocols, and traditions of Indigenous peoples to honor established and new relationships as a representative of the health authority.
- Demonstrated community engagement skills including the ability to promote positive dialogue in a multi-stakeholder environment.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer related tools including word processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation software.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to interact professionally with a variety of staff as a member of a team, other professionals and the public; ability to maintain and build partnerships through relationship building and networking. Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time
Salary Range: $67,861 - $97,550 per year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
Location: This is a provincial position and can work out of any of the 6 regional Cancer Centers.
