Reporting to the Provincial Programs Manager, this role will support creation, maintenance and sustainability of the respective policies supporting the delivery of systemic therapy across the province.
This role will predominantly work remotely; however, the successful candidate is expected to live within the community of one of the existing regional centres. Due to the nature of the role, the ability to travel is also required.
The Policy Researcher, Tumour Groups will work within the BC Cancer Tumour Group structure to help to shape provincial recommendations and guidelines regarding cancer care across British Columbia. The policy researcher will perform critical reviews regarding cancer care best practices, across the broad spectrum of cancer care within the different tumour groups. The policy researcher will also work with the data analytics team to gain information from provincial population projections and outcomes data. These analyses will be used to build patient care pathways, define quality metrics and key performance indicators, and to drive best practices in multi-disciplinary care and use of tumour conferences provincially. The policy analyst will work closely with the Provincial Tumour Group Council Chair and Leads for each of the Tumour groups to develop provincial recommendations around best practices.
What you do
- Identifies key priorities for BC Cancer related health services, policy research and knowledge exchange. Conducts environmental scans to assess and evaluate the current state of practices, guidelines and policies, and develops research proposals for recommended program areas.
- Identifies and undertakes suitable research and knowledge translation projects using evaluation, environmental scan and research findings to inform development of best practice guidelines. Gathers information from a variety of sources, including local, national, and international programs. Researches and reviews policies, systems and practices in light of current evidence. Identifies and recommends practices that will ensure best outcomes. Writes and develops relevant reports and documentation, and presents findings to the relevant stakeholder audiences, including working groups of multi-disciplinary professionals, physicians and clinical specialists.
- Keeps abreast of the current, new, and emerging research & literature in cancer care. Communicates new information to stakeholders, while considering program data in conjunction with deliver costs, technical solutions and legislative changes. Maintains a focused inventory of relevant references on specific issues addressed in response to specific requests or guideline and policy updates.

Prepares backgrounders and other evidence-informed documents for presentation to working groups and other relevant and interested parties including local, provincial, and national partners. Collaborates with the PHSA Policy Office to implement framework tools, processes, education and evaluation processes. Researches healthcare industry policy best practices, specific to Cancer policies throughout Canada and Internationally, and develops policy framework proposals for BC Cancer executive approval.
- Undertakes policy development projects for the BC Cancer involving the necessary stakeholders to review current-state processes and policies, analyze, and synthesize information. Provides advice, guidance, and education regarding PHSA and BC Cancer policy frameworks and processes to support the development of policy projects in alignment with PHSA and BC Cancer policy guidelines and organizational objectives. Coaches stakeholders with respect to policy process and development in order to build organizational capacity and expertise.
- Collaborates with the PHSA Policy Office to assists the BC Cancer and its partners in the development and implementation of strategies for effectively communicating organizational policies and practices across the BC Cancer and externally to BC Cancer partners.
- Anticipates, identifies and analyzes emerging BC Cancer -related health system issues, policy requirements and trends, such as Ministry of Health communiques, legislation changes, reviews existing policies including recommendations.
What you bring
Qualifications:
A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Public Policy/Administration, or a related field, and three (3) years of experience in public administration, planning, or program development in healthcare or social services.
You have:
- Ability to collect and analyze data and produce reports.
- Demonstrated ability to assemble and synthesize complex information and make succinct recommendations.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills involving the use of administrative, operational, financial and research data.
- Familiarity with research methodologies and relevant databases of published literature. Strong planning and project management skills; skill in managing several projects simultaneously.
- Self-manage and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Aptitude for details and accuracy.
- Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment including various word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Skill in conducting critical literature searches using on-line resources.
- Knowledge includes an advanced level of clinical expertise in cancer care.
- Strong interpersonal skills including tact, judgment, reliability, and respect to facilitate team work and interdisciplinary and inter-jurisdictional coordination.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Occasional travel may be required.

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time
Wage: $74,618-$107,264 per year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
Location: Provincial Position and the candidate must be within the vicinity of a regional BC Cancer Centre to work.
