Overview

As a successful candidate, you will be part of a team that processes and analyzes patient samples and produces results that healthcare practitioners rely on to make diagnoses. You will follow established protocols and utilize quality control guidelines to produce accurate laboratory test results. You will collaborate with highly trained colleagues in a technical, ever changing, analytical environment.

About Lower Mainland Laboratories


Lower Mainland Laboratories (LM Labs) is a service of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). We are responsible for providing public laboratory services at 31 laboratory sites and 33 patient services centres throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Hospital-based laboratories within Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Providence Health Care and PHSA provide both inpatient and outpatient laboratory services. Our specialty laboratories provide a variety of reference and specialized testing.

Seventy to eighty percent of clinical decisions are based on laboratory test results. Our highly trained staff are committed to providing the highest quality laboratory services to all our clients. What You’ll Do

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant with PHSA, you’ll be part of a team that supports vital diagnostic services across British Columbia. In this important role, you will:

  • Provide a calm, compassionate presence while collecting blood and non-blood specimens from patients.
  • Prepare and label specimens with accuracy, following safety and quality protocols to ensure reliable results.
  • Package and transport specimens in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and WHMIS guidelines.
  • Forward specimens to referral labs or internal departments, supporting efficient and timely testing.
  • Maintain smooth day-to-day lab operations and contribute to a safe, organized work environment.
  • Register patients, generate blood collection lists, and manage data using the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and related digital tools.
  • Play a key role in delivering high-quality laboratory services that help patients receive the care they need—when they need it most.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate is a dynamic individual with:

  • You are a skilled, compassionate professional who’s ready to make a difference in people’s lives—and you bring the following:
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) program is required.
  • Proven venipuncture experience, ideally in a fast-paced health care setting is a bonus.
  • Confidence working with digital lab systems and a typing speed of at least 25 words per minute.
  • A collaborative spirit and a strong commitment to patient-centered care, even on your busiest days.
  • A personal dedication to ongoing learning—including reconciliation, cultural safety, and anti-racism in health care.
  • A readiness to grow your career while living and working in the vibrant communities of Chilliwack and Hope
  • If you reside 20-30 minutes away from Chilliwack and Hope near Mission, Langley Abbotsford, Sardis, Yarrow, Cultus Lake, Greendale, Rosedale, Agassiz (District of Kent), Harrison Hot Springs it is an asset!

Core Competencies

  • Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety.
  • Basic awareness of research process.
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.
  • Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.
