General Information

Psychologists with BC Mental Health & Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS), a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority, report dually to the BCMHSUS Medical Director and to the senior leadership team for their area of service(s). Medical professionals work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams supporting clients at the Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction.

Working within Red Fish Healing Centre, client focus will be on psychological assessments, psychological treatment, evaluation of the effectiveness and appropriateness of treatment, and education of clients. Additionally, Psychologists support the interdisciplinary team through formal and informal consultations, participation in quality improvement and risk management activities, clinical teaching and supervision to Residents and students.

What is Red Fish Healing Centre

θəqiʔ ɫəwʔənəq leləm’ (Red Fish Healing Centre for Mental Health and Addiction, or Red Fish Healing Centre) is a 105-bed site that treats individuals from across the province who live with the most severe concurrent and complex mental health and substance use disorders. Clients admitted to the Red Fish Healing Centre have both a mental illness and a substance use disorder; many clients also have other chronic health problems. Clients may be admitted voluntarily, or involuntarily under BC’s Mental Health Act.

Specific Accountabilities

Medical Expertise

  • Completes psychological assessments of clients, utilizing standardized and evidence- based interview and assessment procedures. Within a bio/psycho/social treatment model and working as part of an interdisciplinary team, incorporates psychological assessment results with the broader treatment plan.
  • Provides psychological treatment and facilitates the education of referred clients by developing a treatment plan incorporating evidence-based therapies and including the integration of cognitive behaviour therapy, supportive psychotherapy and individual short-term therapy/counselling interventions to clients and group therapy.
  • Assesses client’s progress, providing support to client, family members/care givers and facilitating the process of cognitive, emotional and behavioural changes according to the plan of treatment.
  • Designs, implements, monitors and evaluates cognitive and/or behaviour therapy programs and assist clients to mitigate dysfunctional behaviour, with more constructive/adaptive coping strategies, for referred clients as required. Organizes and leads group behaviour rehearsal/psychotherapy sessions.
  • Organizes treatment plans and participates in case management to ensure continuity of care of clients. Follows up with outside agencies including education institutions, health care facilities and related agencies.

Development of Profession/Services

  • Promotes the development of psychological services within the hospital/program by performing duties such as planning, organizing, providing and participating in inter-disciplinary and intra-disciplinary professional development programs.
  • Evaluates effectiveness and appropriateness of treatment and resources by analyzing learning outcomes, assessing client functioning, identifying opportunities for change and formulating recommendations for quality improvement to ensure optimal outcomes are met.
  • Provides clinical teaching and supervision to Psychology Residents, Post Doctoral Fellows, Addiction Medicine Fellows and Psychiatry Residents from a psychological perspective by planning and client assignment, monitoring clinical teaching and skill development and providing evaluations to appropriate individuals to facilitate a conducive learning environment and professional expertise

Knowledge Exchange

  • Provides formal and informal consultation to interdisciplinary team members, staff/community psychologists, other health care facilities and students by reviewing client/family needs or a specific client’s progress, problem solving and providing guidance/knowledge in the management of a client or client group and information regarding the appropriate usage of psychology assessment and testing tools.
  • Initiates and participates in relevant research by identifying research topics and collaborating on approved research activities. Sources funds from external and internal stakeholders, identifies current trends/gaps in the literature, conducts research and disseminates, presents and publishes findings. Ensures clinical practices and protocols are consistent with current research findings.

Qualifications

Psychologist candidates must have a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with two years therapeutic, diagnostic and consultation services in the designated scope of practice areas of mental health & addiction services such as experience working with individuals with mental health issues, substance misuse, anxiety and mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. Current registration with the College of Psychologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to beginning and continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.
