Clinical Nurse Leader, Systemic Therapy/ Ambulatory Care Unit (Systemic Therapy & Radiation Therapy
Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.
The Clinical Nurse Leader provides clinical nursing and administrative support within the Clinical Services. Duties include providing clinical guidance to nursing staff and coordinating the day-to-day operations in designated clinical area.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Coordinates the daily activities of the assigned area in collaboration with the Manager, Clinical Services to ensure optimum care is provided to patients/families taking into consideration issues such as balance of staff skills and abilities, availability of staff and complexity of care to be delivered. Duties include scheduling staff, making and/or adjusting work assignments and communication of related changes to the team, and assessing the impact these changes will have on patient scheduling. Collaborates with the leadership team to determine the priorities of care related to Clinical Services.
2. Participates in the coordination of patient care delivery by developing unit specific policies, procedures and standards of care and making recommendations for changes and modifications; assessing staffing needs based on planned patient activity and acuity and ensuring appropriate resources are available to meet patient care requirements; ensuring completion of staffing assignments, consulting with Manager, Clinical Services as necessary and revising according to activity and staff changes; providing support to staff in planning and prioritizing patient care delivery; acting as a support for patients and families in crisis and contact for conflict situations.
3. Provides ongoing coaching and mentoring to staff for professional development and performance improvement and to achieve program goals through methods such as providing constructive feedback through formal and informal opportunities, assisting with the coordination of the orientation process; maintains knowledge of clinical practice in a variety of ways including reviewing relevant literature, participating in relevant committees and remaining up to date on practice changes.
4. Participates with the Manager, Clinical Services and the Senior Practice Leader,Nursing to identify individual learning needs or practice changes. The changes can include introduction of new skills/procedures/protocols or equipment through methods such as supporting individual learning for staff, observing and assessing clinical skills, and developing and evaluating learning plans.
5. Participates in the development and implementation of PHSA/BC Cancer policies and procedures at the unit/program level; provides input and making recommendations for changes; supports the implementation of program’s model of care and facilitates a supportive, collaborative environment for all staff using a team approach; participates in program/organizational committees.
6. Assists with the selection of staff for Clinical Services by performing duties such as participating in the interview process and providing input and feedback to the Manager, Clinical Services .
7. Participates in the staff performance appraisal process by providing input to the Manager, Clinical Services on individual nurse’s performance.
8. Provides input and recommendations to the Manager, Clinical Services regarding the evaluation of equipment, products and supplies; advises of related concerns and problems and follows up on maintenance issues; assists with processes for acquisition and inventory of equipment, products and supplies.
9. Participates in the planning, implementation and/or evaluation of quality improvement and risk management activities to facilitate a safe and therapeutic environment for the provision of care; notifies Manager, Clinical Services of issues as they arise. Participates in unit and Program based quality improvement initiatives to ensure services are provided in the most efficient and effective way by identifying patient care and process issues and collecting data such as performance and utilization metrics for review and analysis within the program. Participates in the follow-up of patient safety events and emergency situations.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
• Three years recent related clinical nursing experience which includes teaching and leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Current CPR (level C) certification.
Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership, time management, organizational, teamwork and team building skills.
