Medical Device Reprocessing Technician
Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Sterile Processing Technician at C&W performs specific duties related to the cleaning, decontaminating, checking, testing, assembling, packaging, wrapping and sterilizing of re-processable and reusable hospital products, Operating Room instruments and the equipment utilized for patient care, in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures.
Duties/Accountabilities:
1. Checks, cleans and decontaminates re-processable and reusable supplies and equipment such as surgical instruments, respirators and suction machines by soaking, hand washing, and/or utilizing mechanical washers.
2. Checks and tests suction machines for functionality according to written procedure. Removes suspect items from use and reports these to the Manager or designate.
3. Operates mechanical washers and sterilizers, and participates in routine maintenance of the department’s equipment by cleaning, checking and testing sterilizers and equipment for functionality. Reports maintenance needs to Manager or designate.
4. Sorts, inspects, and reassembles equipment, procedure trays, and O.R. sets according to written procedures.
5. Wraps and labels O.R. instruments, procedure trays, and supplies for sterilization according to written procedures.
6. Fills orders for Sterile Supply Processing Department according to requests.
7. Maintains inventory levels of sterile supplies.
8. Participates in routine maintenance of Department’s equipment by cleaning, checking and testing sterilizers, equipment and mechanical washers.
9. Maintains accurate records to comply with quality assurance standards by performing duties such as reading and documenting biological indicator and signing the sterilizer graphs.
10. Performs routine cleaning of work and storage areas to maintain a clean, safe and orderly working environment.
11. Performs related clerical duties such as answering telephones, taking messages, maintaining records and filing.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience
• Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Sterile Supply Processing course, plus one (1) year recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the hospital.
Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of surgical and medical terminology.
• Mathematical aptitude.
• Ability to communicate and deal effectively with others.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
• Ability to organize work.
