The BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (C&W) is one of the largest integrated academic health centers serving both women and children in Canada. Our collaborative team of physicians, scientists, allied health professionals and administrative staff are dedicated to providing leadership and excellence in: Research, Education, Care and Child Health Advocacy. Our IGH-CW program strives to be a cohesive academic and professional body committed to the advancement of improving the lives and well-being of children and their families around the world, and particularly in lower- and middle-income countries, through the delivery of research, authentic partnerships, and capacity building. We recognize that the enhancement of our Global Health program requires active collaboration and integration with the global partners, Universities, associated hospitals, research organizations, and our various stakeholders. We are equally motivated to actively engage with local and international communities to achieve our collective goals.
The IGH-CW is strongly supported by the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) which is a partnership of UBC and the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). The BCCHR programs include BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre. The BCCHR is dedicated to high quality research spanning a wide range of concerns relevant to children’s and family health.
The inauguration of the Institute for Global Health at BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (IGH-CW) in 2023 marked a pivotal initiative aimed at harnessing the expertise of BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital. This transformative endeavor seeks create a connected Global Health community that builds on our existing strengths, successes and lessons learned. Our Global Health efforts will be grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Provincial Health Services Authority’s (PHSA’s) North Star priorities, especially their commitment to optimizing health and health systems through data, science, innovation, and consideration of diverse worldviews and knowledge systems.
The Professorship is supported by the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Objectives of the Professorship are:
- To develop and support a well‐structured research program in Global health to further elevate BC Children’s & Women’s Hospital + Health Centre (C&W) as a leading institution in Global Health. This research program should be aligned with an existing clinical or research program in child health.
- Provide Global Health mentorship to early and mid‐career faculty and trainees
- Inspire the next generation of trainees and faculty in their own Global Health endeavors;
- Work collaboratively with other clinicians and scientists to develop and lead the Global Health research portfolio with a focus on the health and well-being of those in low and middle income countries
- Further develop and expand the Institute for Global Health at C&W
This Professorship may be linked with a clinical position with one of the clinical Departments at C&W to be based on the candidate’s clinical background and in conjunction with the appropriate Department.
Reporting to the Head of the Department and the Executive Medical Director(s), Global Health, the incumbent will be a senior‐level scientist or clinician‐scientist with a well‐established research program in Global Health who can develop new and complement the current areas of focus and research methodologies. They will forge productive collaborations with other members of C&W, its related Research Institutes and Foundations and IGH-CW. The appointee will be expected to mentor early and mid‐level career faculty in research, participate in the teaching activities, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners.
The successful candidate will hold an MD and/or PhD and have completed relevant training in Child Health and/or Global Health. Clinician candidates will be qualified to practice and be eligible to obtain a license to practice in British Columbia. The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership potential and appropriate standards of excellence in research, have received wide recognition in their sustained and productive scholarly activity, and participated significantly in academic and professional affairs. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviors. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate a willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
