Join our dedicated team at the CARE Program at BC Women’s Hospital, where you’ll play a vital role in supporting patients in a respectful and empowering environment.

What you’ll do

  • Oversees and accountable for the provision of care of the unit/program and overall effectiveness of care. Coordinates and delegates patient assignments, develops master rotations and daily schedules, approves vacation, short term leaves and overtime, and monitors unit/program activities. Implements and monitors the unit/program’s budget and optimal use of resources, identifies systems for improving resource utilization, evaluates patient care products/equipment, identifies, and makes new equipment purchases required.
  • Coordinates daily patient flow and patient care related activities within and/or across the assigned unit(s)/program and is responsible and accountable for making critical front-line decisions regarding patient flow/patient care assignments and responding to work-load/clinical escalations. Collaborates with other areas/external resources to solve operational problems, facilitating continuity of nursing care. Advises the Program Manager of any urgent patient care issues or concerns.
  • Supervises program staff through monitoring the staff’s clinical performance and defines areas for improvement. Completes annual performance reviews and professional development planning for nursing and allied staff in collaboration with appropriate practice leads. Discusses and clarifies performance expectations with staff, provides written input into employee performance evaluations to promote quality work performance, documents performance issues and provides input to the Program Manager regarding probationary period extensions and disciplinary action.
  • Collaborates with the Program’s various leadership positions, and others to provide input for staff educational needs and develops plans for continuing education and professional development. Leads staff education, training, and development activities in collaboration with Program Manager, Clinical Educator, Practice Leaders, or other designated personnel, by conducting needs assessments of individuals/teams, coordinating, or demonstrating new knowledge/skills/procedures, role modeling, supporting autonomous practice, promoting a learning environment and arranging in-service sessions and orientations as required. Maintains records and identifies and schedules staff attendances at yearly updates.
  • Oversees the recruitment and selection of new nursing staff including attending interviews, assessing clinical skills and making hiring decisions. Collaborates with appropriate Practice Leads in the selection of allied health staff by reviewing applications, attending interviews, and providing recommendations.

What you bring

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Five (5) years' recent, related clinical experience in Program area and two (2) year's related administrative/supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Women’s Hospital contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

Core Competencies 

  • Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of leadership and change management practices.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Practice and its application to the defined population of patients.
  • Knowledge and action for Indigenous Cultural Safety and Anti Indigenous racism.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership, supervision, work direction, consultation and to effectively lead change and support staff through transitions.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct clinical risk assessments and provide crisis intervention.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of theory and practice to a case management process.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to beginning and/or continuing their personal learning journey related to Indigenous-specific racism and dismantling systems of oppression, as well as addressing racism more broadly. Shows willingness to articulate and share their learning experiences to contribute to a culture of motivation and inspiration among peers.
  • Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes. Shows a commitment to learning about and upholding legislative obligations and provincial commitments outlined in foundational documents such as the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place: Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan, Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, the BC Human Rights Code, Anti-Racism Data Act, and the Distinctions Based Approach.
