Reporting to the Technical Leader, Transfusion Medicine, the Shift Supervisor supervises the operations of the evening shift by methods such as coordinating and assigning workload for technologists and providing input into performance planning and coaching. Monitors quality control and troubleshoots method and equipment problems. Advises Technical Leader or designate(s) of problems with Laboratory equipment or methods. Performs technical work as a bench technologist.
What you’ll do
1. Supervises the operations of the evening shift by methods such as coordinating and planning work for technologists, and calling in and allocating staff as required. Directs efficient workflow by ensuring that single-piece flow is maintained, and that standard work processes are followed.
2. Monitors quality control, and takes appropriate corrective action when deviations occur, such as method and equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. Ensures preventive maintenance is performed as required.
3. Performs technical work as a bench technologist.
4. Oversees the routine quality of work, makes recommendations for improvements regarding issues such as workflow, policies and procedures, and staffing requirements to Technical Leader. Participates in evaluating and implementing improvements, and attends meetings with Technical Leader concerning departmental operations.
5. Reports issues such as incidents, staff performance, and equipment problems to the Technical Leader to ensure problems are resolved.
6. Assists with the orientation of new technologists by reviewing departmental expectations and policies and procedure, and demonstrating work processes. Provides feedback to the Technical Leader regarding progress and training/orientation requirements.
7. Monitors supply levels, and notifies Technical Leader or designate when supplies need to be ordered.
8. Maintains knowledge of developments in the field by methods such as reviewing literature, keeping abreast of developments in the field, and attending approved lectures, courses and workshops.
9. Participates as an active member of the laboratory team by engaging in activities such as interacting with other staff members, attending staff meetings, identifying concerns about work/workplace issues, being involved in generating solutions to identified problems, and participating in the development and achievement of departmental goals.
10. Ensures safety standards are met by maintaining a clean, uncluttered, and safe work area, ensuring staff and students are aware of cleaning and safety standards and techniques, monitoring adherence to safety protocols, and reporting problems to Technical Coordinator.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Graduation from a recognized Medical Laboratory Technology program plus three (3) years’ recent related experience, including one (1) year in a leadership capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Certified.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.

- Brings an understanding of the Indigenous specific racism and the broader systemic racism that exists in the colonial health care structure, and has demonstrated initiatives in breaking down barriers and ensuring a safe environment ensuring a sense of belonging to all and informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
- Awareness of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (the Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
