Overview

About Lower Mainland Laboratories


Lower Mainland Laboratories (LM Labs) is a service of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). We are responsible for providing public laboratory services at 31 laboratory sites and 33 patient services centres throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

Hospital-based laboratories within Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Providence Health Care and PHSA provide both inpatient and outpatient laboratory services. Our specialty laboratories provide a variety of reference and specialized testing.

Seventy to eighty percent of clinical decisions are based on laboratory test results. Our highly trained staff are committed to providing the highest quality laboratory services to all our clients. The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs technical work involved in biochemistry test procedures and specimen procurement.  As well, the Medical Laboratory Technologist evaluates and verifies results, and prepares related reports.

In this role, you will:

  • Participate in day-to-day work activities by performing manual and automated procedures in the assigned work area.  Notify the supervisor of any malfunctions, abnormal results and other irregularities.  Evaluate and verify results and takes follow up action of any unexpected results according to established procedures.  Enter analytical data into the Laboratory Information System. 
  • Respond to requests and inquiries for tests. Seek direction as required from the Supervisor, Assistant Head Technologist or Head Technologist as appropriate. 
  • Perform all related functions required for the production of final reports such as preparing, testing and assessing quality control results prior to the release of clinical results, troubleshoot sample adequacy and prepare dilutions as required according to established procedures. 
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate laboratory equipment. Perform and document maintenance of laboratory equipment as scheduled. Recognize and report malfunctions in equipment. 
  • Participate in quality assurance programs through methods such as gathering data on turn around times (TAT) for test procedures, and monitoring performance and quality indicators. Report occurrences according to policy and procedures. 

You have:

  • Certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). 
  • One (1) year recent related experience in the designated discipline within the last six years, and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

You have demonstrated:

  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills. 
  • The ability to be self-motivated, manage time, and work independently. 
  • The ability to operate related equipment and use related software. 
  • The physical ability to perform the job. 
  • A working knowledge of and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory. 
  • A working knowledge of computerized laboratory information systems.

  • Rotating days; 7.5 Rotating shifts between 06:30 - 17:00, 14:00-24:00, 22:00-08:00 to cover 24-hour service.
