Technologist
Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (PHC), the position promotes a safe environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.
Reporting to the area Technical Leader, the Medical Technologist 2, Permanent Evenings or Permanent Nights is delegated to be responsible for a permanent evening or permanent night shift. Performs duties of a medical laboratory technologist. Advises Technical Leader or designate(s) of problems with Laboratory equipment or methods. May provide work direction to non-paramedical staff as required.
Duties/Accountabilities:
3.1 Receives, processes, and stores laboratory specimens for analysis, according to established procedures.
3.2 Performs analytical procedures following established protocols. Files results in a timely manner to provide patient/resident reports to physicians and other associated health care professionals. Recognizes abnormal results, and follows up effectively, according to established procedures.
3.3 Enters and retrieves data using the Laboratory Information System, including patient demographics and test results, and answers inquiries about test results from hospital staff and physicians.
3.4 Follows established quality control procedures and records results. Notifies supervisor of significant or ongoing quality control problems.
3.5 Collects blood and other patient specimens for analysis, according to established procedures.
3.6 Assists with the orientation of new staff and teaching students by demonstrating procedures and routines, and answering questions about technical processes in the work area. May provide direction to non-paramedical staff on evening/night shift.
3.7 Performs routine equipment maintenance according to established procedures. Performs basic equipment troubleshooting and notifies supervisor.
3.8 Monitors supply levels, and notifies Technical Leader or designate when supplies need to be ordered.
3.9 Maintains a safe work environment by keeping the work area clean, safe, and organized, and by following the policies and procedures contained in the Laboratory Safety Manual and other safety references.
3.10 Keeps abreast of technological developments in the field and maintains knowledge by reading related literature and attending approved lectures, courses and workshops.
3.11 Participates as an active member of the laboratory team by engaging in activities such as interacting with other staff members, attending staff meetings, identifying concerns about work/workplace issues, being involved in generating solutions to identified problems and participating in the development and achievement of departmental goals.
3.12 Performs related technical procedures, including ECG’s, as required.
3.13 Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
2.1 Education, Training, and Experience
Graduation within the last two (2) years from a recognized Medical Laboratory Technology program, or two (2) years’ recent related experience in the relevant discipline(s), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Certified.
2.2 Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrates current knowledge of relevant laboratory testing, techniques, methods, and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with and deal effectively with, patients/residents, staff, physicians, and other health care providers.
• Demonstrated knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures related to laboratory technology.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
• Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in conflict situations.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize issues, and complete assigned workload.
• Demonstrated ability to demonstrate procedures to other employees and students.
• Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
