Job Summary: In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of PHSA, safety, including both patient and employee safety, is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA. As such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Under general supervision, the Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist (CLXT) performs technical work involved in the duties associated with laboratory and x-ray test procedures. The Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist (CLXT) evaluates and verifies laboratory results, performs patient phlebotomies, performs quality control, participates in quality assurance and prepares related reports. Performs equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, participates in orientation of new employees. Works within health and safety requirements and within the Diagnostic Accreditation Program (DAP). Duties/Accountabilities: 1. Performs daily routine duties in both Lab and X-ray departments as required. Lab • Works on hematology, coagulation and chemistry benches. • Performs daily quality control, as appropriate • Runs patient samples and reports • Receive blood components and products • Assign and dispense uncross matched red cells, albumin, RHIG, IVIG, plasma and cross matched red cells • Transporting of blood components and products • Quarantine and discard of blood products • Pooling/reconstitution of purified plasma products (such as PCC, fibrinogen) X-ray • Performs general x-ray procedures in the department and on the floor • Prepares films for physicians and radiologists by retrieving relevant previous films and information and completing all documentation for each case • Maintains film library 2. Performs inpatient and outpatient phlebotomies. 3. Performs, documents and monitors internal and external quality control. 4. Performs clerical functions such as participating in inventory control, keeping daily statistics, maintaining files, referring x-ray films to appropriate physicians, referring specimens to other labs, answering phone calls, booking procedures, referencing lab reports including Transfusion Medicine reports. 5. Participates in internal and external quality assurance programs. 6. Perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; documentation work performed. 7. Participates in the orientation of new employees, including conducting in-services when required. 8. Provides “on-call” services, as appropriate. 9. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel. 10. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: Education, Training and Experience • Graduation from a recognized Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology Program. • Eligible for registration with a provincial licensing body. • Completion of the NAIT TRAM 101 Course, minimum one (1) year recent, related experience or program/curriculum based instruction in transfusion medicine or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills and Abilities • Demonstrated recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections. • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures, and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety. • Basic awareness of research process. • Demonstrates interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others. • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment. • Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care using point of care instrumentation. • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and software, including techniques appropriate to the designated area of the laboratory. • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
