The Greenhouse Operator performs gardening and landscaping duties.

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.    Performs landscaping duties such as designing and laying out flower displays; selecting fertilizer; maintaining flower and vegetable rotations; ordering items such as flowers, seeds, soil, shrubs and trees; sowing and maintaining lawns.

2.    Selects and applies appropriate solutions, including pesticides; carries out a maintenance control program by spraying areas such as flower beds and shrubberies to eliminate insects, diseases, weeds and other problems. Utilizes best and safest practices in accordance with relevant legislation.

3.    Manages all aspects of container and field culture crops in and around the greenhouse facility. Establishes and manages greenhouse crop trials for development and demonstration.

4.    Constructs, repairs, and maintains the greenhouse facilities including the greenhouses, container and propagation beds, and related equipment. Ensures equipment and supplies, such as, but not limited to tools, materials, and chemicals used in the greenhouse are stored appropriately and are accounted for.

5.    Maintains and repairs irrigation system and performs minor repair and maintenance on gardening equipment such as changing oil and replacing belts.

6.    Replaces and repairs plumbing fixtures such as water supply lines or irrigation lines.

7.    Establishes and monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, recommends repairs and purchases as required.

8.    Utilizes greenhouse software system for climate control, irrigation, etc., and arranges for system maintenance when needed.

9.    Maintains a safe and clean worksite in accordance with WCB and industry standards.

10.    Assigns tasks and provides related greenhouse training and orientation to designated staff and patients.

11.    Performs regular security functions to maintain the safety and security of patients, staff, families, and the public, reports real and potential risks to management.

12.    Recommends the purchase of supplies and materials.

13.    Develops and maintains greenhouse/horticultural industry contacts and partnerships.

14.    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

•    Graduation from a recognized program in Horticulture or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Valid Applicator's certificate.

Skills and Abilities

•    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
•    Ability to deal with others effectively.
•    Ability to organize work.
•    Ability to operate related equipment.
•    Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
