The BC Cancer Research Institute, the research arm of BC Cancer, a provincial cancer care organization based in beautiful and scenic British Columbia, invites applications for a new research chair in Precision Radiation Oncology Research.

This endowed chair is dedicated to advancing the field of radiation oncology research, to improve the methods, effectiveness or applications of radiation oncology to treat cancer.

BC Cancer has a long tradition of excellence and innovation in radiation therapy over 85 years with a strong track record in clinical trials and outcomes research. BC Cancer supports a well-established brachytherapy program, strong stereotactic and oligometastasis teams, and a growing adaptive radiotherapy program. These programs represent the collective and collaborative work of the robust medical physics, radiation therapist, and radiation oncologist teams across the provincial programs and all regional centres of the province.

We seek a visionary clinician scientist or clinical investigator, with a proven track record of academic excellence to lead an innovative research program in radiation oncology. The position is targeted at all career stages, provided that applicants have a demonstrated track record of clinical or translational research achievements in the field of radiation oncology. Applicants should have an MD or MD/PhD, and be eligible for licensure for clinical practice in the Province of British Columbia and clinical privileges at BC Cancer.

Examples of research areas include, among others, the development of new methods for precision radiation therapy delivery, translational or clinical research on how to improve the efficacy of radiation therapy, clinical trials on novel approaches to improve the efficacy or reduce undesirable effects of radiation, or population health studies on implementing or measuring the impact of radiation therapy approaches. We seek researchers with a clinical practice in radiation oncology, with demonstrated capabilities to lead multidisciplinary research projects.

The BCCRI’s flagship research building, the LJ Blackmore Research Centre, is located in Vancouver and provides access to basic, translational, clinical and population health researchers, in addition to state-of-the-art research laboratories. The BC cancer patient population is uniformly treated within the provincial cancer program allowing access to clinically-annotated biobanks and outcomes databases. Additional resources at the BCCRI include a pathogen free Animal Resource Centre and Genetic Modeling Core, Flow Cytometry Facility, and access to Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre.

BC Cancer provides prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, research and education to improve the lives of cancer patients in British Columbia. Part of the Provincial Health Services Authority, BC Cancer operates six regional cancer centres in Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George, Surrey, Vancouver and Victoria. It is actively expanding its presence with the construction of new cancer centres in Surrey, Burnaby, Nanaimo and Kamloops. The successful applicant will be offered a position in one of the six regional cancer centres, based on research and clinical interests and requirements.

Successful candidates will be advanced for a clinical or partner track appointment at the University of British Columbia, in the Division of Radiation Oncology within the Department of Surgery.

Minimal qualifications for this position include a MD or PhD/MD with an outstanding record of research achievements, including high-impact publications, significant grant funding, and contributions to the advancement of radiation oncology. The applicant should be eligible for licensure to practice radiation oncology in the province of British Columbia.
