Reporting to the Executive Director of the Regional Cancer Centre, the Regional Leader Clinical Medical Physics is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading the activities of physics staff in providing clinical treatment, calibrating and commissioning equipment, training medical and radiology students and technicians and conducting research and development on techniques and equipment. The Regional Leader is responsible for developing the vision for the medical physics department in alignment with the mission and strategic goals of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) and BC Cancer. This includes representing the cancer centre in decision making forums across the organization at a provincial level and in collaboration with similar roles across the province of BC. The role is responsible to set service and budget priorities, allocate resources, plan goals and objectives that align to the strategic direction of PHSA and BC Cancer, and implement and monitor quality improvements and indicators. In addition, the Regional Leader is responsible for leading and managing the centralized consultation services, administrative support services, and special projects as necessary.
Overseeing a department of 40 staff including medical physicists and residents, physics assistants, radiation therapy service technologists, tool and die makers and a strong group of MSc and PhD students in the UBC graduate program in Medical Physics.
Vancouver Centre is imbedded in a rich academic and biomedical community with close connections to other regional BC Cancer centres across the province.
What you’ll do
- Provide administrative and clinical leadership to the BC Cancer- Vancouver medical physicists in accordance with the highest standards of practice and as required by regulatory and accrediting agencies
- Plan, develop, and evaluate the annual operating plans and capital and operating budgets for the medical physics department ensuring that the strategic direction aligns with the mission, vision, and direction of PHSA and BC Cancer.
- Evaluate and coordinate strategic priorities across the health system including but not limited to: program development, accreditation, standardization, and quality assurance. This includes hiring, training, educating, and evaluating staff.
- Assess resource utilization patterns, and supply issues and provide related advice as required to promote patient safety, best practices, improved patient access, and efficient flow of patients across the care continuum.
- Establishes an infrastructure conducive to research, education and innovation initiatives. Develops, implements, participates in, and monitors research and academic agendas relevant to medical physics professional practice. Ensures the development and achievement of relevant standards, quality indicators, and outcomes.
What you bring
Qualifications:
M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in medical physics from a CAMPEP accredited medical physics program OR Ph.D. degree in physics and a certificate from a CAMPEP accredited medical physics program. Completion of a CAMPEP accredited residency program and at least fifteen (15) years of closely related experience. Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) or American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification AND Fellowship in the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (FCCPM) certification are required. National and/or international recognition in the field of medical physics, including peer reviewed literature contributions, grant funding, involvement in national or international professional bodies, and academic involvement. Established track record as a teacher and supervisor of graduate students in Medical Physics. A combination of education, experience and demonstrated ability, recognized both internally and externally as equivalent, may be acceptable.

- Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system.
- Support team members on their learning journey, ensuring education strategy for team/department to implement Indigenous Cultural Safety at a practical level.
- Work collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically.
- Have commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
- Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time
Salary Range: $187,972 - $281,960. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
